What happens when I have to follow a tempo that is not appropriate for me? I tend to feel uncomfortable, stressed, under pressure. Wether because it is too slow for me, and my impatience is rushing me, exciting my "hurry up" driver! Or because it is too fast for me, and I don't have time to think clearly, or to control what I am doing or what the team is producing. And when it is too fast for me, I am unable to enjoy the journey, I just rush and tend to appreciate far less what I am doing. Just because it is slightly too fast. Finding the appropriate rhythm is not easy. And we often tend to accelerate, without noticing it, especially when things are becoming difficult. Like a young violinist playing a difficult passage in a concerto: he will speed up in the passage, maybe with the belief that it will be over sooner if he accelarates.... but by doing this, he is making the passage even more difficult and stressful. So when things are becoming difficult, better slow down, take a deep breath, and smile. It will make it easier J * "Not quite my tempo!" Whiplash 2014

http://start.lesechos.fr/entreprendre/outils-conseils-pratiques/preparer-son-projet/comment-entreprendre-sans-faire-un-burn-out-7017.php If 64 metronomes can synchronise spontaneously, and if the audience of a concert can ask for a repeat and applause at the same frequency, it probably means that cooperation in our organizations can be facilitated by some natural phenomenon. The question is: how do we allow this natural phenomenon to work? Or what are the behaviours that could sabotage the natural movement and delay the cooperation? Surprisingly enough, recent research has demonstrated that heart rates and breathing also synchronise in a group of singers:
http://www.the-scientist.com/?articles.view/articleNo/36412/title/Choir-Singers-Synchronize-Heartbeats/ More info or questions about our seminars to develop cooperation and agility: Laure Helfgott +33 6 99 68 82 21 How many sounds will you be able to hear during this surprising piece of music? 4'33'' by John Cage John Cage wanted us to understand that there is no such thing as silence. After having visited the anechoic chamber at Havard University, he realized that even there, what he was hearing wasn't the silence but his own heart beats, blood circulation, and breathing. He composed this piece of music to emphasize this "no-silence". When elaborating a Soft Skills course for the first promotion of EMDIEL - Executive Master of Digital Innovation and Entrepreneurial Leadership - at ESCP Europe, I wondered what content and how I could possibly teach that, and even wether it was teachable.
Then I read the interesting research by Robert A Baron and Gidon D Markman in which they demonstrate that one of the key social skills that enable an entrepreneur to successfully develop a new business is his/her ability to build efficient interactions with all kind of people, from associates to clients, providers, new contacts, friends&family, perfect strangers .... the very wide quantity of persons with whom an entrepreneur might interact, everywhere, everyplace and everyday, in order to build prototypes, create a community, engage new resources, and progressively develop new opportunities. And that is teachable! We can definitely learn how to build efficient interactions. We even have models and tools for that. One of them is the Process Communication Model, that I particularly like for its efficiency, simplicity and insight. So I decided to base my 8 hours course on the Process Communication Model, and make them practice and experiment efficient interactions, developing their ability to switch from one channel/perception to another, to identify the signals of miscommunication and quickly adapt, and to understand the links between psychological needs and distress sequences... Next time, I will probably also include a workshop on Listening. Maybe another one on Intuition. And another one on our fears and remedies... In the end, I realize that soft skills are a vast and entertaining field, where experimentation and dialogue are fundamental, inviting us to invent a new way to teach and learn. Ideas, Comments or Questions ? +33 6 99 68 82 21 Fascinated and deeply moved by the book I am currently reading, "Sapiens, a Brief History of Humankind", by Yuval Noah Harari, and before finishing it, I had a quick look at the "acknowledgements" page, I was curious to know who Yuval Noah Harari would acknowledge, and what for.
And first, I was a bit disappointed, seeing a whole bunch of people being thanked for their "advice and assistance". And then, I saw this wonderful sentence: " Special thanks to Jared Diamond, who taught me to see the big picture". It really impressed me, and immediately raised a lot of questions: how Jared Diamond managed to teach that? How long did it take, with what sort of theories, exercises, behaviours, hard and soft skills? Do we need to be a famous scientist, a Pulitzer Prize author, a wonderful pianist, and to have received the National Medal of Science, to be acknowledged for teaching somebody "to see the big picture"? Hopefully not. But still. It is not so easy to be acknowledged for something really meaningful for us, isn't it? So maybe the best way would be: - to question ourselves: "what would I love to be acknowledged for?" - And then, to work hard and give it to as many people as we can! :-) We never know: maybe someone, one day, will acknowledge you for that. Or maybe not. But anyway, you will know for sure that you gave it, and that it was meaningful for you and useful for them. So you will be able to acknowledge yourself for that!
